Overview
The client needed to move away from a complex, multi-tab Excel workbook used to track internal controls and risk items. The spreadsheet was error-prone, lacked audit trails, and made it difficult to assign ownership or track remediation status at scale.
The Challenge
The existing risk register was maintained in a large Excel workbook with multiple interconnected tabs. It was difficult to track ownership, lacked version control, and provided no automated alerts for overdue items. The compliance team spent significant time manually updating the spreadsheet and chasing colleagues for status updates.
Our Solution
Synapx built a custom Power Apps canvas application backed by Dataverse, replacing the Excel workbook with a structured, searchable database. The app provides role-based views for control owners, risk managers, and auditors, with Power Automate flows handling notifications for upcoming reviews and overdue items.
The solution includes dashboards showing control health at a glance, filtering by risk category, owner, and status, plus a full change history for audit purposes.
The Result
The compliance team now has a single source of truth for all internal controls, with clear ownership, automated reminders, and complete audit trails that satisfy regulatory requirements.
Manual effort was dramatically reduced, and the risk of errors from the previous spreadsheet-based approach was eliminated.
